Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to us. Learn how we collect, use, and protect your data when you use NoMoScroll.

Last Updated: August 4, 2025

Thank you for using NoMoScroll, a Chrome extension designed to promote digital wellness by analyzing your scrolling behavior. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over your data.

By installing and using NoMoScroll, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

NoMoScroll is developed by Ashutosh Kushaha. We are committed to protecting your privacy. If you have any questions, please contact us at ashutosh.kuswaha03@gmail.com.

1. Information We Collect

To provide our core features, we collect the minimum data necessary only when the extension is active on a webpage.

Behavioral Data:

Metrics related to your scrolling activity, such as scroll count, time spent scrolling, and timestamps. This data helps us identify patterns like "doomscrolling."

Contextual Data:

The domain of the website you are on (e.g., example.com), which helps the AI understand the context of your activity.

Content Snippets:

To classify the content you are viewing (e.g., "Educational" vs. "Entertainment"), we process a short excerpt of text from the active webpage (the first 500 characters).

Important Note on Content Snippets:

While we only use these snippets for AI-powered topic classification, we acknowledge they may inadvertently contain personal information (such as names in an article or social media post). This data is processed ephemerally, is never used to identify you, and is not stored on our servers.

Technical Data:

Your IP address is included in temporary server logs for security and debugging purposes. We do not use it for any other reason.

We do NOT collect:

  • Your browse history
  • Personal identifiers like your name or email
  • Cookies
  • Data from inactive tabs

2. How We Use Your Information

Our use of your data is strictly limited to providing and improving the core functionality of NoMoScroll.

To Provide Core Features:

Your behavioral data, contextual data, and content snippets are sent to our secure backend (hosted on Google Cloud Run) for real-time analysis by the Google Gemini AI. This analysis generates personalized recommendations, such as suggesting a break or offering bonus scrolls.

For Security and Troubleshooting:

We use temporary server logs, which include your IP address, to diagnose technical issues, prevent abuse, and ensure the security of our service.

For Anonymized Analytics:

We may use fully anonymized and aggregated data (which cannot be linked back to any individual) to improve our AI models and the overall effectiveness of the extension.

We do not use your data for advertising, marketing, profiling, or sell it to any third parties.

3. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not share your data, except in the limited circumstances necessary for the extension to function.

Google (for AI Analysis):

We share the content snippets and contextual data with Google via their Gemini API. This sharing is solely for the purpose of receiving the AI analysis required for the extension's features. Google processes this data according to its own Privacy Policy.

Legal Requirements:

We may disclose information if required by law, such as in response to a court order or subpoena.

To Protect Our Service:

We may share information if necessary to protect against fraud, malware, or security threats.

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

4. Data Security and Retention

We are committed to data minimization and have implemented technical measures to protect your information.

Encryption:

All data is transmitted between your browser and our backend using secure HTTPS encryption.

Ephemeral Processing:

The data used for AI analysis (content snippets, scrolling metrics) is processed in real-time and is not stored on our servers after the analysis is complete.

Log Retention:

For security and debugging, our backend server automatically generates temporary logs for each request. These logs, which may include your IP address, are retained for a maximum of 24 hours and are then automatically and permanently deleted. Access to these logs is strictly limited to technical personnel for troubleshooting and security purposes.

Access Controls:

Our backend is protected by rate limiting, Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) restrictions, and other security best practices to prevent unauthorized access.

5. Your Rights and Choices

We believe in empowering you to control your data.

Consent:

We obtain your affirmative consent through an onboarding prompt before any data is collected. You can withdraw this consent at any time by disabling or uninstalling the extension.

Access and Deletion:

You have the right to request access to or deletion of your personal data. As our data retention is extremely short, this primarily applies to your IP address, which may exist in our server logs for up to 24 hours. To make a request, please contact us at ashutosh.kuswaha03@gmail.com, and we will process it in accordance with applicable laws.

Opt-Out:

You can stop all data collection immediately by turning off the extension or removing it from your Chrome browser.

5.1. Your Rights Under GDPR and CCPA

If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA) or California, you have specific data protection rights. We act as the Data Controller for your information. You have the right to:

  • The right to access, update, or delete the information we have on you
  • The right of rectification (to correct inaccurate information)
  • The right to object to our processing of your data
  • The right of restriction (to limit how we process your data)
  • The right to data portability (to receive a copy of your data)
  • The right to withdraw consent at any time

To exercise these rights, please contact us. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a Data Protection Authority about our collection and use of your data.

6. Children's Privacy

NoMoScroll is not intended for use by children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected such data, we will take steps to delete it immediately.

7. Use of Permissions

NoMoScroll requests the minimum permissions required to function:

  • activeTab: To access the content of the current, active tab for analysis when you use the extension
  • storage: To save your personal settings locally on your device
  • host_permissions: To securely communicate with our backend URL

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal reasons. We will notify you of any significant changes. Your continued use of the extension after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the new policy.
